    Defensible space is the area around a home that has been designed to protect it from ignition and gives firefighters the space needed to defend your home. 90% of homes that burn during a wildfire are ignited by embers that start spot fires that then spread to the house. By eliminating vegetation and combustibles within the first 5 ft of the home and maintaining space around plants throughout your yard, you can reduce your risk.

    Many people believe that eucalyptus trees will explode in a wildfire. That’s not true. Eucalyptus trees ARE a fire hazard, but one that can be managed. They produce highly flammable oils and shed large amounts of combustible bark. But it’s possible to maintain them in a way that will keep them from igniting. Clean up bark and debris regularly, and remove all lower limbs. With regular maintenance, eucalyptus trees can be part of a firewise landcape.
